Choosing the “Best” School: Why It Might Not Be the Best for You

When searching for a school in the UK, whether for Key Stage 3, GCSEs, or A levels, it is tempting to focus only on rankings, reputation, and exam results. After all, the “top” schools often boast outstanding grades, famous alumni, and impressive facilities. The reality is, however, that the “best” school on paper is not always the one that is best for you, the pupil.

A truly outstanding education is not just about prestige; it is about fit. Choosing the right environment can make the difference between simply getting through school and genuinely thriving. At Highgrove Online School, we often pick up the pieces when a pupil decides to leave a school that hasn’t been a good fit for them, and we know how unsettling it can be for pupils and their families. So how can you find the best school for you, and what does a good fit look like?

What Does “Best” Really Mean?

League tables and rankings often measure:

  • GCSE and A level results
  • University placements
  • Facilities and resources
  • Inspection ratings (such as Ofsted)

These are important, but they only tell part of the story. They do not measure how comfortable you feel, how supported you are, or whether the teaching style suits you.  They also don’t give any indication of how flexible or accommodating the school is, or how many pupils leave the school because it’s not working for them.  A school that gets great academic results can do this through superb teaching and high levels of support for pupils, or by an extremely selective entrance policy and a policy of preventing weaker students from taking exams in subjects they are struggling with. And then of course, league tables don’t include every school. While our exam results at Highgrove Education would place us in the top 1% of schools, online schools are rarely included in league tables.

The more important question to ask is how the school achieved their academic results, and whether the learning environment is a good fit. For example, a highly academic school with intense pressure might suit a student who thrives in competition, but it could generate anxiety in someone who learns better in a more balanced, supportive environment.

Why Fit Matters More Than Rankings

Every student is different. The right school should match your personality, goals, and learning style.

Here are some key factors to consider:

  • Class size: Would you benefit from smaller classes and more individual attention?
  • Support systems: Does the school offer strong pastoral care and academic support?
  • Extracurricular opportunities: Are there activities that match your interests (sports, arts, debate, STEM)?
  • Cultural environment: Will you feel welcomed and included, especially as an international student?
  • Learning style: Do students have agency and choice in how they learn, or is there a one-size-fits all approach. If it’s the latter – is it a good fit for your preferred way of learning?

A school that aligns with these factors will help you perform better academically and enjoy your experience more.

The Pressure of “Top Schools”

Many students assume that attending a highly ranked school guarantees success. However, this is not always the case. At some top schools, academic pressure can be intense and constant. The competition among students might be very high and individual attention can often be limited, especially if class sizes are fast-paced. For some students, this environment is motivating. For others, it can lead to stress, burnout, or a loss of confidence. Success is not just about being in a high-performing school; it is about being in a place where you can perform at your best. Many of the student who join us at Highgrove Education come from top schools with competitive environments which were not the right fit for them.

A Better Way to Choose

Instead of asking, “What is the best school?” try asking:

  • Where will I feel supported and challenged in the right way?
  • Which school will help me grow, not just academically but personally?
  • Where can I build confidence and independence?

Your school experience is about more than exam results. It shapes your confidence and independence, communication skills, interests and passions, and future academic and career choices.  A school that nurtures these qualities will prepare you not just for exams, but for university and beyond.

Final Thoughts

Choosing a school is one of the most important decisions you will make, but it is not about chasing prestige. It is about finding the right environment where you can grow, succeed, and enjoy your journey.

At Highgrove Online School, we believe there’s a right school somewhere for every student. Asking the right questions about the school you’re joining can help you avoid choosing a school that is the wrong fit.

The “best” school is not necessarily the one at the top of the rankings. It is the one where you become the best version of yourself.
