Exams

At Highgrove Online School we prepare pupils for a wide range of internationally recognised exams, including international GCSEs, A levels and university access exams such as UCAT and STEP. These are the same exams as taken by pupils in physical schools across the world. Highgrove Education is a registered Pearson Edexcel exam centre and is a remote assessment centre for Edexcel international GCSEs, A levels and EPQ, meaning pupils can take many of their exams online from home if that is their preference.

When do pupils take exams?

As a British international online school we are eligible to offer modular international GCSE and A level programmes, which means our pupils can take exams throughout their course rather than taking all their exams in the final summer.  Pupils on our standard international GCSE programme will often take some exams in October of year 11 and others in summer of year 11. Pupils on our standard international A level programme will typically take their AS exams in the summer of year 12 and their A level exams in the summer of year 13.

Where do I take the exams?

All GCSE and A level exams must be taken at a Pearson Edexcel International approved examination centre. We help all our pupils find a suitable examination centre for every exam, wherever they are in the world. Highgrove is an approved Edexcel examination centre for remote invigilation for international GCSEs and A levels, which means that if you prefer to take your examinations from home rather than in a physical exam centre, this can be an option.

During your enrolment to the school we will talk you through the exams registration process and consider any potential difficulties that could arise regarding exam centres, possibly due to living in a remote location or a location with fewer approved centres available.

After enrolment, our team will begin to explore all possible options for ‘host’ centres, based on your preferred location. If you want to take your exams in a physical centre, this could be a local school or college, a British council centre, or a specialist exam centre. We will take care of everything from checking availability and negotiating the fees, through to making the registrations with the exam board.

Throughout the process we will liaise with you to ensure the chosen centre is suitable and that everything is in place in time for the upcoming exam series. Where we have not been able to find a suitable approved centre locally, we will discuss with you any alternative options which may be available. This can sometimes involve travel to another town or city where more exam centres are available.

Remote Invigilation

Highgrove Education is an approved examination centre for remote invigilation, which means our students have the option of taking their international GCSE and A level exams from home. This innovative approach means students can sit their exams in a familiar, comfortable environment, reducing stress and enabling them to perform at their best. Remote invigilation uses secure technology that locks down the computer, monitors activity, and ensures the integrity of every assessment. A parent or guardian must be present during the exam process to assist with setup and submission, but they must leave the room during the live exam.

Do you support pupils who need exam access arrangements?

Our SENDCo works closely with all our pupils with Special Educational Needs or Disabilities (SEND) to ensure that we identify any adjustments that need to be made to put them on an equitable footing when taking examinations. We then liaise with examination centres to ensure the pupils receive the appropriate ‘access arrangements’, such as extra time or rest breaks. The same accommodations are made for pupils during admissions tests, internal tests and mock exams at the school.

How are Science practicals taken online?​

International GCSEs and A levels do not require pupils to conduct experiments in a laboratory. Pupils are instead assessed on their understanding of practicals via their written examinations. Highgrove Online School ensure pupils are fully prepared for these exams and have a deep understanding of the methodology and processes involved in practicals. Our self-study courses contain videos of the practicals and interactive simulations which pupils can use to test their knowledge of the correct equipment and procedures. Where appropriate, pupils are set homework to conduct some scientific experiments within their home environment to get some hands-on practical experience.
