How Flipped Learning Improves A-level Results: Our Experience

Tutor Association conference and the flipped learning results from the presentation

At the recent The Tutors’ Association National Conference in London, Heather Rhodes shared how our flipped learning model has become a cornerstone of our approach to teaching GCSE and A level pupils. We are proud to be known for achieving some of the top A-level results among online schools (The Good Schools Guide, September 2024) and we attribute much of this success to our approach to learning online. In this blog post we share the recent presentation from Heather Rhodes on our flipped learning results.

What is Flipped Learning?

As we have written recently, flipped learning reverses traditional teaching by having students engage with the content through self-study before a lesson. This allows classroom time to be spent reinforcing, discussing, and expanding on the material. This model also helps pupils by making lesson time more fun and interactive.

Watch our overview video see this in action and hear from two A-level pupils.

Success with Flipped Learning Results

Our online teaching team use flipped learning across nearly two-thirds of A-level courses and half of our GCSE subjects. Recent flipped learning results show the impact of this approach with our pupils achieving 50% A*, 75% A-A*, and 90% A-B*. This is a stark contrast to the 2024 UK national average of 9% A* and 54% A-B grades.

Key Insights from Our Presentation

Drawing from her experience at Highgrove Education and Harrow School Online, Heather shared how flipped learning results have become a game-changer for pupil progress and independence.

Flexibility and Differentiation

This slide explained how flipped learning results adapt to each pupil’s pace and learning style. Pupils engage with content independently, revisiting challenging sections when needed. This method enhances understanding and creates a tailored learning environment where lessons can focus on discussion, problem-solving, and feedback.

Benefits for Pupils and Tutors

Flipped learning supports pupils in developing essential skills for academic success and future learning. It fosters independence and provides pupils with valuable lifelong study skills.

Structure and Resources

Highgrove’s self-study materials, including videos, diagrams, and interactive assessments, provide pupils with engaging, clear guidance. This makes self-paced learning both effective and enjoyable.

Tutoring and Coaching Support

Highgrove’s learning coaches offer one-to-one support, helping pupils manage their workload and set meaningful goals, like university applications.

Impact and Outcomes

The results from flipped learning are starting to consistently show that it leads to better academic performance and increased engagement. It also helps our pupils to develop skills which help them to retain information and prepare them for university study. These outcomes highlight the effectiveness of the approach for both academic and personal growth.

With its flexibility and differentiation, flipped learning is shaping how we teach and how pupils learn.
