KS3 History Taster Lesson

Our Taster Lessons are live events that give you the opportunity to meet our expert teachers and see what teaching and learning is like at our ground-breaking online school. Our History Teacher, Mr David Smith, will lead an interactive lesson that will give you an idea of what it’s like to study History at Key Stage 3 and will offer you the opportunity to ask any questions that you have about the subject and/or teaching and learning at Highgrove Online School during our Q&A.

Dr David Smith is a highly experienced historian who holds four degrees including a Master of Philosophy in Politics, Philosophy & Economics from the University of Cambridge and a PhD Doctorate on British wartime politics 1940-1945 from the University of London. He has taught History for 30 years in leading UK independent schools and enjoys working with students on a wide variety of historical courses.

What will pupils learn in Key Stage 3 History?

Key Stage 3 (KS3) History (typically Years 7 to 9, ages 11 to 14) builds a chronological understanding of British, local, and world history. Students study major turning points, develop enquiry and source-analysis skills, and investigate themes like power, conflict, and societal change.

A high-quality history education builds pupils’ understanding of Britain’s past and the wider world while sparking curiosity about the past. It develops critical thinking skills by encouraging them to question, evaluate evidence, and form balanced judgements. It also helps pupils understand societal complexity, change over time, and their own identity within a diverse world.

This online Taster Lesson will showcase how studying KS3 History equips pupils with the understanding and confidence they need to pursue historically valid enquiries including some they have framed themselves, and create relevant, structured and evidentially supported accounts in response.
