Planning Your Child’s Education: A Homeschool Curriculum for Years 9–11

e-learning school

Homeschooling through the secondary years can feel like a daunting task, especially as students approach key academic milestones like GCSEs and A levels. But with thoughtful planning and the right resources, your child can thrive academically while still benefiting from the flexibility of studying from home. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to structure a homeschooling curriculum for Years 9 to 11 for pupils who plan to take GCSEs, including what subjects to cover, how assessments work, and where to find support.

Why Plan from Year 9?

Year 9 is a crucial transitional stage. While formal GCSE preparation typically begins in Year 10, Year 9 gives students the chance to strengthen their foundation in core subject and to help them choose which subjects they wish to continue at GCSE. This is also a good time to identify any learning gaps or support needs and build independent study habits, which are crucial for successful preparation for GCSE exams. By starting with a more structured year 9, homeschooling families can create a smooth path into the GCSE years.

Core Subjects to Include at GCSE

Most students will take 8–10 GCSEs, although some homeschooling families will focus just on the core subjects, and others will take a wider range over a number of years. Here are the essential subjects to include in a homeschooling curriculum:

  • English Language & Literature: ideally you will take both, but if you need to choose just one, English Language is more commonly included as a requirement for future work and studies
  • Mathematics: this is a priority, as it’s required by so many jobs and programmes of study. Make sure you take the higher paper if you are aiming at a 5 or above.
  • Science: aim to take at least two of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, and ideally all three. Combined Science (worth 2 GCSEs) is an alternative option. Make sure you take the iGCSE syllabus, as there is no requirement to take practicals in science laboratories.

And here are the additional subjects that many pupils will choose to take:

  • Humanities: Most students will take at least one humanity, such as History, Geography, or Global Citizenship. The latter is a relatively new qualification that includes a social impact project and offers a broad introduction to governance and society worldwide.
  • A Modern Foreign Language: It is common to take at least one language GCSE, such as French, Spanish or German. If you are multilingual, check if there is a GCSE in any languages you are fluent in.
  • Technical Subjects: Subjects like Computer Science and Business are popular becuase they offer practical knowledge that can be applied to future careers
  • Creative Subjects: Art, photography and music are all subjects that help artistic students get some creative downtime while gaining an academic qualification.

The beauty of homeschooling is flexibility, allowing students to follow subjects they enjoy and take exams when they feel ready to do so. It’s not uncommon for homeschooling pupils to stagger GCSEs, fast-tracking some subjects while taking others over an elongated period. Homeschooling students often mix and match their provision, studying some subjects entirely independently and taking others with the support of tutors or online schools. Highgrove Education works with pupils on a full-time or part-time basis, and supports pupils to take examination programmes based on their ability rather than their age.

How to Structure Your Week

Each week should allow a balance of academic focus, creativity, and independent work. Here’s a sample weekly structure:

  • Core Subjects (15–20 hours/week): Maths, English, Science
  • Optional Subjects (5–15 hours/week): Humanities, Languages, Creative electives
  • Extra-curricular studies: Reading, taking elective courses or joining online clubs and societies
  • Physical Education & Breaks: Essential for well-being and focus
  • Socialising with Peers: This is an important part of growing up and whether it is through assemblies and House meetings at an online school or clubs and sport activities in your local area, this part of education should not be overlooked.

Online schools like Highgrove Education offer live, interactive lessons, a self-study platform, a rich extra-curricular programme and a supporting community of academically minded peers.

Assessment & Exam Preparation

Even in a homeschool setting, it’s important to assess progress regularly. You should consider taking regular timed mock tests and practice papers, and obtaining teacher feedback on your work, including tips on how to best apply your knowledge to examination style questions. You need to start looking for an exam centre at the start of Year 11 (or sooner if taking exams early), and if you believe that you are eligible for access arrangements, make sure that you have evidence from a medical professional and/or from the SENDCo at your online school. Highgrove Education can support with this process, from finding an exam centre to making the registrations and applying for access arrangements.

Planning a homeschool curriculum for Years 9 to 11 is an important investment for pupils studying outside of mainstream education, and with the right structure, subject choices, and guidance, your child can achieve strong GCSE results, setting them up for future success.
