Standing Out in the UK University Admissions Process: University Admissions Exams, The Personal Statement, and Extra-curriculars

Online Student

Applying to top universities in the UK is more competitive than ever. With outstanding A level grades now the baseline, pupils must look beyond the curriculum to set themselves apart. That’s where great results in university admissions exams, a strong personal statement, and well-chosen extra-curricular studies come into play, and Highgrove Online School is here to help you excel in all three areas.

University Admissions Exams

Many degree courses at top UK universities use admissions exams to differentiate between good and exceptional candidates. For example, the mathematics tripos at Cambridge requires the STEP exam, medical and dental degrees require UCAT, law degrees need LNAT, and engineering degrees typically require PAT or ESAT.  These are tough exams which generally offer a greater level of challenge than A levels. Most are taken in October of year 13, although some fall in summer between years 12 and 13, and the STEP exam is taken just after A level exams in year 13. Highgrove Education provides preparation courses for all of these subjects, normally starting in January of year 12, although bespoke tutoring options with later start dates can be arranged. Make sure you check early what additional exams, if any, might be required for your preferred degree course, and get started early on exam preparation.

The Personal Statement: Your Voice, Your Story

Your personal statement is your chance to bring your application to life. It’s an opportunity to express who you are, why you want to study your chosen subject, and what makes you a strong, well-rounded candidate. With upcoming changes to the UCAS personal statement, shifting to a structured three-question format for students applying in 2026 and beyond, it’s more important than ever to understand how to craft compelling responses that showcase your enthusiasm, experience, and ambition.

At Highgrove Education, we recognise how critical this step is. That’s why our A level coaches work closely with each student to help them reflect on their goals, articulate their passions, and link their experiences directly to their course choices. Our coaching is holistic and not only focused on academics but also on ensuring students are physically and mentally prepared for the demands of university life. Whether it’s structuring your personal statement, choosing the right course and university, or preparing for interviews, Highgrove’s coaching and university support is there at every step of your journey.

Extra Curriculars: Going Beyond the Syllabus

When admissions tutors look at applicants, they want to see evidence of a real passion for your subject. That’s where evidence of extra-curricular study comes in. Showcasing academic exploration beyond your A level courses, such as reading books, attending webinars, listening to subject-related podcasts, or completing online elective courses, can all provide evidence of a genuine interest in your chosen field.

At Highgrove, our elective programme is designed to help pupils get a taste of subjects they might want to go on to study at university. Interested in becoming an architect? Why not take an introductory course on Computer Aided Design, or an elective on Art and Architecture?  Thinking about studying finance or economics? We have courses that prepare you for the CISI exams in investment and financial asset management, putting you on a pathway to qualification as a stockbroker before you leave school. Whether you’re fascinated by neuroscience, philosophy, global affairs or quantum physics, our programme connects you to resources and experiences that allow you to dig deeper.

We also offer the Extended Project Qualification as a stand-alone course, allowing pupils to take a deep dive into a subject related to a future career or degree course. This is your chance to explore your passion in depth, while developing independent research skills which are highly valued by universities. The UCAS points for an EPQ are equivalent to an AS level, and some universities lower their offers for pupils who gain an EPQ. It also gives you some great talking points for your personal statement and for university interviews.

And the best part? Our electives and EPQ are available to all pupils, whether you’re enrolled full-time, part-time, or even externally.

Explore Electives

With university admissions as competitive as they’ve ever been, it’s the combination of personal insight, academic curiosity, and individuality that helps you stand out. At Highgrove Online School, we’re committed to giving you the tools, guidance, and opportunities to not just meet the standard, but to rise above it.

Whether you’re crafting your personal statement, diving into extra-curricular activities, or exploring your interests through electives, we’re here to support your journey.
